The third of December marks the annual observance of the United Nations' International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Founded in 1992, its goal is the promotion of the equal rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in social and political life.
Thus, it is a fitting day to remember and ask for prayers from the first quadriplegic man ordained to the priesthood, Fr. Bill Atkinson, OSA.
Rendered quadriplegic at the age of 19, while still in the Augustinian Novitiate, Fr. Atkinson was granted a dispensation from Pope Paul VI and was ordained a priest in 1974.
In 2017, the Augustinians of the Villanova Province opened the Diocesan Cause for the Beatification of Fr. Atkinson. In this video, those who knew Fr. Atkinson personally share their testimonies of the man they believe to be a saint.
